I am delighted to share the experiences of Eden, aged 15, who is being brought up in a fostering family. I asked Eden a number of questions and here’s what she had to say:
Did your mums talk to you about fostering and what were your initial thoughts?
“My mums were already fostering before I was born but they ask my opinion now on any new foster children and if I think are a good match to our family”.
How old were you when you got your first foster brother/sister?
“I was born when they were already fostering but I do remember them, and I remember them leaving. I can be lovely but upsetting to”.
Do your friends ask you about fostering? What do you tell them?
“Sometimes they ask me and I tell them fostering is like ‘short-term adopting’. All children that share our home are very different and stay for different amounts of time”.
What do you like about being part of the Amicus Family?
“I feel a sense of community, they include everyone. The Social Workers take an interest in you as well”.
How would you sum up being in a foster family?
“Adventurous, playful, intriguing but certainly not dull!”
